A brick arch draws the eye towards a quiet courtyard. The inspiration is Nikiszowiec, a mining settlement begun in 1908. It remains a residential neighbourhood; respect residents’ privacy when walking there.

Construction of the Giesche miners’ settlement began in 1908. Its former laundry now houses the city museum’s ethnology department. The exhibitions offer a way to understand Nikiszowiec through residents’ homes, work and creativity, as well as its striking architecture.
