Katowice up close

Modernism, townhouses and a wooden church

Katowice has more than one architectural face. Discover it through contrasts: façade details, modernist lines and the texture of timber.

History and context

The Modernism Trail links interwar buildings, including the Drapacz Chmur skyscraper and Silesian Parliament building. A different chapter is the wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel in Kościuszko Park, usually dated to the early sixteenth century. Heritage can speak of established traditions as well as the ambition to be modern.

Take a closer look

Choose a few buildings and give them your attention rather than racing through the route. Look at corners, balconies and how façades admit light. Offices, churches and homes have their own access rules; an architectural walk does not imply permission to enter.

The archcathedral — light and stone

Pale stone and a monumental dome create a contemplative mood. The inspiration is Katowice’s Cathedral of Christ the King. It is an active place of worship; visits should respect services and parish rules.

St Mary’s Church — a Gothic rhythm

A slender tower and pointed arches lead the eye skyward. The inspiration is the neo-Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception, known as St Mary’s. An actual visit can combine architectural observation with a quiet pause.
