City and regional history

The history of Katowice: a city in motion

Before exploring its façades, discover the story. Read Katowice in layers: early settlements, industrial growth and today’s cultural city.

History and context

Katowice gained town rights on 11 September 1865; the settlements now forming its districts are older. Railways, mines and steelworks drew people, skills and languages here. In 1922 the city became part of Poland and the capital of the autonomous Silesian Voivodeship.

Take a closer look

Let your walk become a conversation between eras. Compare a decorated townhouse with the clean lines of a modernist building, then consider how an industrial site can find a new purpose. At the city history museum, look for residents’ stories: they give dates a human scale.
