Auschwitz-Birkenau: remembrance and testimony

This place calls for time, preparation and quiet. It is an encounter with evidence of crimes and victims’ lives, not an entertainment stop.

History and context

Auschwitz was a German Nazi concentration and extermination camp in occupied Poland, operating in 1940–1945. Auschwitz II-Birkenau became the complex’s principal site of the mass murder of Jews. The museum estimates that at least 1.1 million people were murdered, mostly Jews; victims also included Poles, Roma and Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war and others.

Remembrance and responsibility

Prepare through the official Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial: check entry arrangements, educator languages and age guidance. We do not promise tours in every language of this website. Follow the museum’s photography rules and respect the victims’ memory. This introduction does not replace museum education or survivors’ testimony.

Getting there from Hornigold

The Memorial is in Oświęcim and nearby Brzezinka. Visits start at Auschwitz I: the Visitor Services Centre, Więźniów Oświęcimia 55. The route buttons lead from Hornigold at Kopernika 6 to this entrance, rather than directly to the Birkenau gate.

By car

Enter the full Visitor Services Centre address in your navigation app. The Museum recommends approaching from Legionów Street (DW 933); parking is paid. Choose your route using current traffic and your reserved entry time. Check journey time and any road tolls before leaving.

By train or bus

Search for Katowice → Oświęcim connections for your visit date. The Museum gives the distance from Oświęcim station as about 1.5 km; allow for the walk or onward transport. For a bus, check the exact arrival stop. Plan to arrive with time to spare and check the return service; timetables and changes depend on the date.

Between Auschwitz I and Birkenau

The two parts of the Memorial are about 3.5 km apart. The Museum provides a free shuttle between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Check departure times on site and follow your educator’s instructions. This shuttle does not provide transport from Katowice.

Museum travel information

Plan your visit

Reserve a named entry pass at visit.auschwitz.org before travelling. Since 1 March 2026, all passes have been available online only, not at the entrance. Admission itself is free; educator-led visits are paid. A standard guided visit lasts about 3.5 hours. The Museum asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes before it starts.

The Museum advises against visits by children under 14. Check required documents, photography rules and accessibility arrangements. The maximum bag size is 35 × 25 × 15 cm. Dress appropriately for a place of remembrance and the weather; part of the visit is outdoors.

This website’s seven languages do not guarantee tours in all seven. Confirm the educator’s language for your date, particularly Chinese and Ukrainian. The driver, booking form or confirmation may use a different language from the guided visit.

Tour operators

These independent operators publish relevant tours. Hornigold does not sell these excursions through this website. Confirm prices, availability, language and pickup arrangements directly with the operator.

What to confirm before paying

Ask for a confirmed Museum entry time, details of the entry pass and educator service, the exact collection point, return transport and the total price. Check time-change and cancellation terms. Transport to Oświęcim alone does not secure Museum admission.
