Jewish heritage and remembrance

Silesian places of remembrance: distinct histories

Not every camp belonged to the same system, and not every tragedy had the same perpetrators. Remembrance begins with precision.

History and context

Łambinowice holds the history of prisoner-of-war camps, including German camps of 1939–1945, and a separate postwar labour camp of 1945–1946. In Świętochłowice, distinguish the Nazi Eintrachthütte subcamp from the postwar Zgoda camp under the communist security apparatus. Each requires its own chronology, sources and account of responsibility.

Remembrance and responsibility

The Silesian Centre for Freedom and Solidarity at Wujek Mine tells another chapter: the suppression of the strike on 16 December 1981. Begin with the institution responsible for each memorial and its educational materials. Avoid collapsing distinct systems of violence into one account; leave room for individual lives.
