Jewish heritage and remembrance

Jewish heritage: people, places and absence

The history of Jewish residents does not begin with the Holocaust. It begins with families, work, religious life and building a city together.

History and context

Katowice’s Great Synagogue was burned by the Germans in September 1939. Surviving traces and memorials need careful interpretation. POLIN Museum’s Virtual Shtetl documents the community; in nearby Będzin, the Zagłębie Museum cares for the Mizrachi Prayer House.

Remembrance and responsibility

At a memorial, pause over a name, a biography or a testimony. A cemetery or former place of prayer is not a photographic backdrop. Use museum research and arrange access with the custodian; the absence of a building does not erase its history.
